Abstract

During the Totalitarian decades of the 1920s and 1930s American women writers associated totalitarianism with both Fascism and Communism. This paper studies American women writers, who have themselves encountered totalitarian politics. As immigrants to Europe, they observed the rise of Communists and the Nazis. As women writers they faced numerous challenges – both personal and professional, because of their gender, the political environment and many other circumstances
