Abstract

Historical sources sparsely document the Mongol military operations in Southeast Europe and have received relatively little scholarly attention, especially compared to the extensive research on events in Central Europe. Notably, the Mongol attack on the Latin Empire of Constantinople is omitted or only briefly mentioned in studies addressing the turbulent events of the early 1240s. Drawing on a wide range of sometimes conflicting source material, this paper analyzes the course of the Mongol campaign against the Latin Empire in 1242 and examines its immediate and long-term consequences
