Abstract

The EU-funded project “Diplomatarium Serbicum Digitale” (DSD) started in 2015 with the aim of editorial and critical processing the entire corpus of charters and letters issued by Serbian medieval actors (late 12th – late 15th century), as well as presenting them in digital form. In 2018, a database was put online, where a majority of 600 identified documents were presented through new editions, metadata and images. After the EU support programme had been finished, the project was discontinuited, until being taken over by the Audiovisual Archive and Digitization Center of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (AVA Center). The activities were resumed in 2022 with the task to transfer all existing files to the newly created online application of the AVA Center and to carry out the editorial processing of the remaining documents. Revived in a new format, the database keeps its basic structure corresponding to a traditional printed edition. Although electronically accessible and searchable, it still does not represent a digital edition as it remains a local SQL database. It is nevertheless considered an important contribution to the regional research community, which otherwise lacks a complete collection of editions or regesta, even in printed form. However, the resuming of the DSD project also opens the new perspective of transferring the database content to XML format. The work on establishing a “real” digital edition started by using the TEI standard, whose elements and attributes were adapted with certain modifications to the terminology of the Vocabulaire in ternational de la Diplomatique. The created schema allows detailed description of metadata as well as the direct markup of the charter texts, which enables enhancing the potential for computer-assisted charter processing and integration with other corpora provided in the similar way. In addition to the brief history of the project and an overview of the corpus processed so far in both formats (local database, XML), the paper also includes some experiences in gaining new diplomatic insights through the use of the existing da tabase
