Abstract

The British policy towards the Balkans and Serbia (in the second half of the nineteenth century), especially after the Balkan Congress, was characterized by strong feeling of distrust and aloofbess as the result of constant Russo-phobia that swept Britain in the thirties of the ninenteenth century. Its attitude towards the Balkan states and people it based on three main postulates. The first postulate referred to strictly implementing of the provisions of the Berlin Congress, that is, the maintenance of the relations that were established at the congress, and which actually marked the expatriation of Russia from the Balkans. The most important postulate iinvolved the constant care whether the Russian influence on the Balkans and Serbia strengthened or weakened, and how to find the mechanisms to disable Russian expansion and prevent it influence on that area. Further, there was a fear of Pan Slavic movement, which was to be eliminated at all costs. The third postulate, which British doplomats were constantly abided by, implied the prevention of creating a larger community of Slavic people and states, because there was a fear that it could be a dangerous tool in the hands of Russia. This tool might serve as a factor for its return agaon to that area and approaching Constatinople and the strrait.
