Abstract

The end of military operations in 1918, establishment of peace and restoration of War-ravaged societies in many and particularly newly created European states were accompanied with great expectations of their male and female citizens in terms of political and social democratisation. Significant war contributions of women were the basis on which women’s movements in the majority of countries founded their programmes in order to gain their civil and political rights. Historiography agrees that the politicization and nationalization of women in most countries took place in war and the first postwar years, regardless of whether women gained the right to vote. This paper analyses the influences of the post war situation in Fiume and the environs and the entry of troops of Gabriele d’Annunzio, an Italian poet and political ideologist, in the city in September 1919, on the process of politicization and nationalization of women of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in the spirit of the state Yugoslav ideology. The events directly before and after his sixteen month administration of Fiume led, among other factors, to the gradual shaping of the policy of gender defined Yugoslavism at the Founding Congress of the National Women’s Union of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes held at the same time in Belgrade. On the other hand, d’Annunzio’s Fiume episode received the support of organizations of the Italian women’s movement and its most radical feminist wing in Milan, which during those years embraced corporatism and fascist ideology. In both countries, just after the war the issue of civil and political rights of women entered the public political discourse and became the social issue which remained unsolved during the entire interwar period
