Abstract
Due to vital statistics for the period 1842–1914, reconstruction of basic demographic trends in the Principality/Kingdom of Serbia is presented. The enormous population growth (336 %) was mainly a result of natural population increase. The basis for the development is identified in extremely high and even growing birth rates during the pre-transition phase and at the beginning of demographic transition. Immigration seems to have some influence on rising birth rates
