Abstract

The aim of the paper is an analysis of an image of a Serbian nobleman in popular tradition of the late Middle Ages. The research compares facts from legends, poems, myths and stories with reliable medieval sources. In this respect, the accent is put on a military role of noblemen in the period between 14th and 15th century. Contacts with the Ottoman Empire and the Hungarian Kingdom had a significant influence on the development of Serbian elite stratum which is evident in epic poetry. Finally, the attitude of noblemen towards the central government can be perceived through Serbian popular tradition
