Abstract

On the basis of Western, Greek, Slavic, and Oriental sources, as well as archaeological material, the paper offers insight into the 'dark age' of the history of Bulgarian-Tatar relations during the second half of the fourteenth century, until the takeover of Varna by the Tatars of Aktau in 1399. In the article, new evidence is presented to prove that the actions of the Tatars of Aktau were not directed against the Despotate of Dobrudja, as is usually supposed in Bulgarian historiography
