Abstract
Tanasko Rajić from the village of Stragari at the foot of mountain Rudnik, the flag bearer of Karađorđe and a participant in the First and Second Serbian Uprisings, died heroically on Ljubić on 6 June 1815. Although there is little preserved original data about his life, his heroic death at the cannons, when his comrades had left their position, became already in the 19th century a symbol of the liberation war of the Serbian people and the Serbian revolution. The narrative about the heroism of Tanasko Rajić evolved in the twenties and thirties of the 19th century in the works of Vuk Karadžić, Simo Milutinović Sarajlija and Gerasim Đorđević, as well as in the paintings by Anastas Jovanović, Steva Todorović, Rihard Puhta, Pavle Čortanović, Petar Ranosavić in the following decades. The heroism of Tansko Rajić has been included in history textbooks since the late 19th century. The heroization of Tansko Rajić in Serbia is inseparable from similar processes in other European nations and functioned within the ideological framework of the „golden age and its renewal.“ In Serbia, during the rule of the Obrenović dynasty (1815–1842; 1858–1903), the Takovo Uprising and Miloš Obrenović were interpreted and promoted as the beginning of the restoration of the „golden age“. The paper applies the theoretical propositions of Ernest Renan, Alaida Asman and Jan Asman on the influence and importance of collective memory on the formation of national identity. In the end, the paper suggests that the sacrifice of Tansko Rajić be seen as a symbiosis of Christian values and the epic Kosovo vow
