Abstract

The paper discusses some of the key demographic characteristics of the urban population in Serbia at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. Emphasizing factors such as sex and age distribution, marital pattern, household composition, dwelling ownership, engagement in agriculture, and literacy, the study relies on the official data from the 1900 census. The analysis presents aggregated data for both urban and rural settlements, providing a nuanced understanding of their differences and similarities. Additionally, the paper extracts and highlights specific, data for the three largest urban centres - Belgrade, Niš and Kragujevac, offering deeper insight into their dynamics
