Abstract

Little is known about the economic situation in Serbian lands until the 12th century. Throughout the Middlle Ages most of the population was engaged in agriculture. The development of mining in the mid-13th century leads to the rapid economic rise of Serbia. Numerous mines opened and started the production of silver, iron, led, copper and rarely, gold. In a short time the mines became important urban settlements and trade centers. The development of mining leads to strenghtening of ties between the inland and coastal towns and to a stronger involvment in trade in the Mediterranean. Commercial traffic and urban settlements experienced greatest rise in the first decades of the 15th century. Not only social and political, but also an extraordinary economic rise of Serbian state were violently stopped by the fall of Smederevo in 1459
