Abstract

The article examines the activities of royal and noble chanceries in medieval Bosnia and the characteristics of the documents issued by them, with particular emphasis on their diplomatic features. During their development between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries, Bosnian chanceries were exposed to influences from various directions. Among the surviving corpus of documents, those written in the Cyrillic script and the Slavic language predominate, accounting for approximately 80 percent, while the remainder were drafted in Latin script and in the Latin language. Whereas the Slavic documents were intended for domestic recipients and for Dubrovnik, the Latin ones were addressed to Hungary, Venice, and the rulers of other Western countries. The earlier models of Slavic documents should be regarded as adapted versions of the documentary forms employed by Dalmatian notarial offices and Dubrovnik, although they also depended on the practices of Byzantine and Hungarian provincial administrations. Following Bosnia’s elevation to the status of a kingdom in 1377, the documents issued by Bosnian monarchs came under the influence of the imperial chancery of Serbia and, indirectly, of Byzantium. By contrast, the Latin documents primarily imitated the diplomatic forms used by the Hungarian nobility and by local authorities
