The preserved corpus of documents issued by rulers belonging to the three dynasties which successively stood at the forefront of Serbian medieval statehood between the late 12 th and the mid-15 th century (Nemanjić, Lazarević, Branković) reflects the presence of influences from both the Byzantine Empire and the Latin West. Although the corpus contains a significant number of documents issued in Greek or Latin, around 80 % were issued in Serbian, strongly stimulating the development of autochthonous practices and solutions. Analysis of the interaction of these three traditions reveals that the intensity of foreign influences varied over time, closely mirroring developments in Serbia’s political relations with Byzantium and the West, and especially the changing status of its rulers within the international hierarchy. Nevertheless, evidence indicates that, in addition to the rulers as the documents’ issuers, the documents’ recipients were also an important factor in determining the presence and application of these traditions
