In the period from the 7th to the 12th centuries, intellectual centers moved from the Christian part of Europe to Damascus, Baghdad and Cordoba. Arabic writers saved many data about history and geography of the Mediterranean. The pilgrimage to Mecca and conquest of new territories stimulated Arabs to travel, develop geography and cartography. After these journeys many travelogues appeared that included interesting data about Islamic lands and their neighbours on the other coast of the Mediterranean. The chapter is based on the Arabic sources dealing with the history and geography of the Mediterranean from 9th-12th centuries. In their works Arabic travel writers described natural-geographical specifics of the Mediterranean, seas and rivers, but also some regions and nations settled in the territories. The writers also differentiated parts of the Mediterranean Sea and gave them special names
