Abstract

Development of settlements on the territory of Bohemia, Slovakia, Poland and Russia in the Early Middle Ages was shaped by different political, historical and economic conditions. Comparison between written sources and archaeological finds on the territory of Bohemia, Slovakia and Poland shows that the Slavs were primarily bearers of the Prague-type culture. In Slovakia the Presov-type culture appeared, with close analogies in Poland. Based on research of a great number of towns and villages in ancient Russia, five cultures can be determined: East Slavic culture, Prague-Korchak, Penkovka, Ipotesti-Candesti and Volincevo culture. In the forest-steppe areas of Ukraine the widespread cultures are Prague-type, Penkovka, Zhitomir and Raikovets
