Abstract
The article examines the relations between the Bulgarian Principality of Vidin and the Tatars of the Lower Danube in the time of Nogai and after his death. On the basis of Serbian, Arab and Latin sources, it was concluded that the Principality of Vidin, ruled by Shishman became dependent on the Tatars in the late 1280s, simultaneously with the expansion of Nogai's power to the western borders of the Wallachian Plains. The Nogai’s Tatars provided strong support to the Principality Vidin principality in the last decade of the thirteenth century against the Serbs, presenting an insurmountable barrier against foreign expansion. After Nogai's death, Shishman lost a valuable ally and defender. However, the Vidin principality remained in the Tatar sphere of influence during the reign of Khan Tokta (until 1312), and in this way, Shishman was able to prevent the claims of Tsar Theodore Svetoslav to the northwestern Bulgarian lands
