Abstract
The article deals with notices about the pilgrims from Western Europe that travelled along the so-called Via Militaris, between Belgrade and Constantinople in the 11th century, before the First Crusade. These reports provide fragmentary information about local geography, ethnography and topography, but they are nonetheless important, as they mention two cities on the border of Bulgaria – Belgrade and Morava, and show that sparsely inhabited region of the ‘Bulgarian forest’ or ‘Bulgarian desert’ situated between Belgrade and Niš became one of the greatest temptations of Western travelers even before the First Crusade
