Abstract

The paper analyses the place of the army of the Principality of Serbia in the plans of liberation and unification of the Serbian and South Slavic peoples in the mid-19th century. While the plans created in the 1840s and 1850s – the Načertanije of 1844 being the most important, referred to the historical right and the military option was not explicitly examined, after the establishment of the national army in 1861, the military forces of the Principality – the national army, with around 100,000 soldiers and the standing army with around 3,000 soldiers – were increasingly taken into account. The majority of plans from the 1860s considered either the organisation and support to the uprisings of the subjugated Christians, or a union of the Balkan states against the Ottoman Empire.
